The plastic lantern: Herzog and de Meuron's Laban Centre in London.

It is something of a miracle that the Laban Centre got built - Dr. North and her colleagues seized a moment, way back in 1995 when the germ of the idea was born, when it was possible, with immense effort, to make all the necessary pieces fall into place. Today, with Lottery money exhausted and land values in Deptford rising, it would out of the question. Then again, it is the coming of Laban that is adding value to the area and bringing the developers sniffing round. It's amazing what you can do with a few sheets of not-so-cheap plastic.
